Smooth pursuit eye movements in response to unpredictable target waveforms.

چکیده
Humans track smoothly moving objects with a combination of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements, called dual mode tracking. A pseudo random ternary sequence was used to generate an unpredictable target motion that had linear ramps of random velocity and duration. This aperiodic waveform eliminated the subject's ability to predict target motion. Saccades were removed from these records leaving only smooth pursuit eye movements, called single mode tracking. Transfer functions were computed for both single and dual mode tracking. The difference in the transfer functions between 0.7 and 1.0 Hz is an indication of the quality of the smooth pursuit tracking which decreases with increasing target waveform bandwidth and with fatigue. The coherence function provides another quantitative measure of smooth pursuit tracking.

Manual tracking enhances smooth pursuit eye movements.
Previous studies have reported that concurrent manual tracking enhances smooth pursuit eye movements only when tracking a self-driven or a predictable moving target. Here, we used a control-theoretic approach to examine whether concurrent manual tracking enhances smooth pursuit of an unpredictable moving target. In the eye-hand tracking condition, participants used their eyes to track a Gaussia...
متن کاملCoordination of eye and head movements during smooth pursuit in patients with vestibular failure.
During pursuit of smoothly moving targets with combined eye and head movements in normal subjects, accurate gaze control depends on successful interaction of the vestibular and head movement signals with the ocular pursuit mechanisms. To investigate compensation for loss of the vestibulo-ocular reflex during head-free pursuit in labyrinthine-deficient patients, pursuit performance was assessed ...

For the majority of human smooth pursuit eye movements made to a horizontal ramp target of unpredictable direction, the reciprocal of the latency appears to have a Gaussian distribution of the same general form as for saccades to step targets, but with smaller median. There are more latencies shorter than some 100 msec than would be expected from such a distribution: they form a distinct popula...
متن کاملVisual-tracking neurons in area MST are activated during anticipatory pursuit eye movements.
Here, I report that rhesus monkeys are able to generate anticipatory smooth pursuit eye movements in the transient absence of a moving target, if this target moves periodically. The eye velocity before target reappearance was significantly larger if the target trajectory was predictable compared with the control condition consisting of unpredictable target trajectory. Parallel to the registrati...
متن کاملHuman smooth pursuit: stimulus-dependent responses.
We studied pursuit eye movements in seven normal human subjects with the scleral search-coil technique. The initial eye movements in response to unpredictable changes in target motion were analyzed to determine the effect of target velocity and position on the latency and acceleration of the response. By restricting our analysis to the presaccadic portion of the response we were able to elimina...
